Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where are Practices / Swim Meets held?
A: Practice and Home Swim Meets are held at Adamson Lagoon (1900 Anderson St in College Station). Away Swim Meets are held at the location of the Away Host team. Be sure to check the schedule for specific locations and times.
Q: What are Time Trials?
A: Every swimmer must have a Time Trial time to begin participation in Dual Meets. These times allow swimmers to be properly seeded in their events at the official Dual Meets. Tsunamis tries to do our Time Trials in a meet format so that swimmers & parents can learn what to expect at a swim meet. We can also test all of our systems and it gives new officials a chance to practice. Because Time Trials is not a meet we swim against another team there are no official disqualifications; every swim time counts at this "mock meet".
Q: What are Evaluations?
A: Evaluations are different that Time Trials. Evaluations serve a few purposes;
- Make sure ALL swimmers can safely make it the length of the pool.
- Get a standard time for the swimmer's age group to an initial lane for practice.
- Get a general idea of that swimmer's abilities so we know where they are starting with their swim experience, knowledge & skill.
Q: Are Practices required?
A: There is not a required volume of practice to attend each week. Swimmers will improve as they practice though, so swimmers attending practice regularly will get better and therefore will swim faster and have fewer disqualifications during meets, be more likely to be assigned to relays and they will move up in the lanes (ability levels) during practice more quickly than those who do not attend practice.
Q: Are Swim Meets required?
A: No, Swim Meets are not required but they are definitely encouraged. Swim Meets are one of the ways swimmers can tell they are progressing through the swim season. Swim Meets are also the way we participate in Tsunamis Swim Team as a TEAM. During each Swim Meet there is an overall "winner" of the meet. In order to win any meet we need to have enough swimmers compete to earn points.
Q: What are Dual Meets?
A: Dual meets are the meets we swim against another individual team. Time Trial times are sufficient to be entered into any event at a Dual Meet. These are "official" meets so Disqualifications will count in order to create an environment of fairness & learning for all athletes.
Q: How do I sign up for a Dual Meet?
~ Log in to www.collegestation.swimtopia.com
~ Select the Swim Meet from the Schedule. Click MEET ENTRY.
~ Click EDIT, then select "attending this meet"
~ Select up to 3 individual events for your swimmer to swim at that meet.
~ Indicate if your swimmer is available for Relays using the drop down box
~ SAVE
Q: What is the Divisional Meet?
A: The Divisional Meet marks the end of the regular NWAL (North West Aquatic League) Season. All of the teams in the Division come together for one meet where the teams compete for the Division Championship. At this meet all swimmers must have competed in TWO previous dual meets and they must have achieved an official NWAL time in the event they plan to swim at the Divisional Meet (even for a relay). This is one reason we encourage each swimmer to at least try every event at a dual meet during the season; it takes at least 2 dual meets to get every individual swim completed
Q: What are Invitational Meets?
A: Each season we choose 2-3 Invitational meets to attend as a team. Invitational meets will have required qualifying times. These times are posted on the meet invitations that can be found on the Tsunami website once we have chosen those meets for the season. As the season progresses & your swimmer gets some established times you will be able to see if your swimmer qualifies by logging onto Swimtopia and attempting to register your swimmer for these meets. Once you respond as "attending" the events your swimmer is eligible for will come up as available entries. These can be edited until entries for the meet are closed.
Q: Where do I pick up any awards, medals, ribbons, pictures, etc.?
A: We have file boxes that have a file for each Tsunami Family. These boxes are placed out (usually at the entrance of the pool or the entrance of the swim deck) at the beginning of each practice and put away at the end of every practice (they do not stay out during public swim). We will put any ribbons/awards for swimmers in the family file as well as team pictures, etc.
Q: What if the weather is bad?
A: If there is lightning or thunder in the area swimmers must exit the pool. There must be 30 minutes with NO lightning or thunder for swimmers to be able to return to the pool. Texas weather is often a bit "moody" and can change it's mind very quickly. We do not cancel practice if the weather app or the news says there is a chance of inclement weather. We wait to see how the actual weather is before we cancel a swim practice. There will be notifications sent regarding each practice time as we know more about how the weather is in "real time".
